Relocated Axses_ Gwanghwamun installation
This project reinterprets Gwanghwamun as a site where multiple historical and ideological axes converge. Once dominated by a singular power-oriented direction, the space is now reconfigured into a network of shifting perspectives. The twisted ceiling becomes an architectural device that gathers these dispersed gazes into a single visual field, revealing the coexistence and negotiation of diverse viewpoints within one spatial continuum.

Relocated Axses
Gwanghwamun Gate in Seoul symbolizes the coexistence of tradition and modernity, reflecting dominant ideologies across history. Established in 1395, Yukjo Street was aligned with Gwanghwamun's singular axis, but today, ideological clashes have transformed it into a blend of multiple axes, blurring the clarity of its original boundaries. This project aims to visually represent this transformation with minimal distortion by internalizing Gwanghwamun Square. Through subtle adjustments to Gwanghwamun's axis, it proposes a visualization of the blend between historical and contemporary axes, offering a fresh perspective on their power. The internalization project adds depth and new value to our understanding of boundaries and axes.

I decided to build on the slope that serves as a passageway for people ascending from the subway station to the ground level, a turning point where the gaze naturally aligns with Gwanghwamun, symbolizing the moment of ascent and encounter. The slope itself becomes an ambiguous space that exists between the realms of the outside and the inside. By placing the 'relocated axis' in this transitional space, we hope to provide a new perspective on Gwanghwamun Square. The straight axis that existed in Gwanghwamun Square is distorted by using a slight visual twist to create a distortion of the axis, creating a space where various gazes mix along the twisted axis. It is an architecture that makes you feel the existence of various axes in the space of Gwanghwamun, where various ideologies are mixed.

The integration of rotational kinetic boards reflects the interplay of various axes of modernity, blending the historical significance of Gwanghwamun Gate with the contemporary essence of Gwanghwamun Square. This collage serves as a bridge between past and present, intertwining the spatial narratives of both iconic landmarks. By facilitating dynamic movement and reconfiguration, the rotational kinetic boards dissolve the traditional boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, creating a seamless continuum between the realms within and outside Gwanghwamun Square. This interconnectedness fosters a sense of unity and fluidity, where visitors can traverse through the architectural landscape with ease, experiencing the convergence of historical legacy and contemporary vitality.
